We think not!

I was invited to speak on CBC’s BC Almanac today in response to the state of volunteering in Canada. I thought I would share some of the concepts that we gathered in preparing for the interview. Tell me what you think!

Statistics Canada releases new study on volunteerism

The headline some will take away from the study is that 66% of Canadians cite lack of time as a reason for not volunteering. But this statistic misses the bigger picture. Looking at the numbers another way, there’s a different story: The proportion of Canadians who volunteer has held steady at 44%. So, accounting...

EPISODE 2 - Walking the Tight-rope: Employee vs. Independent Contractors

For our 2nd podcast, guest speaker Gordon Holley, President & CEO of Humanity Financial Management, shares his expert perspective on the topic: Walking the Tight-rope: Employees vs. Independent Contractors. Gordon provides insights on the perceived benefit to individuals and organizations to engage in a contractor relationship, rather than as employer-employee. He then explores the potential risks an organization exposes itself to for improperly classifying people as independent contractors when they are really...

For those of you who have stood across from the Tourist Information Centre in Victoria harbour and admired the Fairmont Empress at the corner of Humboldt and Government, you may not have had a clue you were so close to such an unlikely celebrity sighting. I certainly didn’t on a recent visit, until a small hand grabbed mine and yanked me down a little path leading into The Empress gardens. Rather than a detour to “smell the roses”, however, this detour offered us quite the unexpected – Roger, the yellow-bellied marmot.

What a wondrous moment to spot this (somewhat elusive) colony of one. Upon...

The provincial legislation that creates and governs all societies in British Columbia is receiving an overhaul. The current Society Act dates from 1977 and while outdated in some respect remains the legislation of choice for not-for-profit organizations in BC.

The new Societies Act (the “Act”) was driven by a growing need to modernize the regulatory scheme governing societies in BC. On April 22, 2015, the Act received third reading at the BC legislature. The replacement legislation will likely...

Branislav is intense, thoughtful, and widely read and travelled. Our conversation spanned a wide range of topics including power and who wants it, gender salary differences, and his thoughts on good leadership. He believes in authentic, flat leadership and prefers to let others shine and lead. As a leader he needs to be fully committed to the cause and certain that he is solving more problems that he is creating.

Originally trained as a dancer in Munich, later deepening his studies at conservatory level at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London, Branislav also holds a Master...

From time to time I’m approached by friends and colleagues for advice about how to become a member of a not for profit Board of Directors. I believe very strongly in the value of this kind of volunteering, and I’m happy to share some thoughts. Here are five key tips that I have learned over many years as a volunteer and as a consultant working with NFP Boards.

Follow your passion

The most successful Boards are comprised of people who have a deep and sincere passion for “the cause” of their respective organizations. What do you really care about? Which NFP organizations are working in that...

Our sector is committed to action for the public good - no small mission! And as leaders in the sector our role is to envision something different from what is today and ask “what positive change can we drive?” The stakes are high. It is an exciting time to be a not-for-profit leader.

And, let’s admit that it is also a challenging time. Leaders in our sector are stretched - meeting multiple demands, engaging teams, managing finances, evaluating outcomes. To be a great leader takes time, mentoring, and professional development opportunities. But are we making that time? Or the investment...

Leila is an ebullient and engaging personality, honest and direct. We had an enjoyable lunch where I learned about her childhood and the seeds of her entrepreneurial spirit.

She grew up in Capetown, South Africa where, in the 1950’s, her aunt and mother founded the well-known Maynardville Park Open Air Theatre. Leila inherited their can-do attitude, sheer resilience, and marketing flair.

Leila assumes every challenge can be overcome and she draws on her energy and stubborn nature to achieve it. She knows when something must be done, and goes ahead and does it regardless if she has done it...

Some years ago I was going through a tough time personally and discovered the practice of gratitude. This involved intentionally writing in a journal what I was grateful for every day, and re-reading it every morning. I listed many things, from the mundane - “it was sunny today” to the emotional - “I am grateful for the love of my family.” I found that this deliberate focus on the positive improved my outlook and I felt happier. <--break->

I know that many of us in the not-for-profit sector can struggle with the enormity of the challenges facing us and the issues we are trying to solve. At times, our...
