Essentials for New Managers is a program for new and aspiring not-for-profit managers to strengthen their management skills. 

Over three sessions, program participants gain tools and approaches to achieve success in their new management role.

Is Essentials for New Managers right for you?

You are an ideal candidate if you:

  • are new to a not-for-profit management role or are looking to be promoted in the next 6-12 months
  • provide leadership or supervision in your current role
  • have a vision to take on further management responsibilities in your not-for-profit career

If you are the sole employee in your organization (e.g. the executive director), this may NOT be the best program for you. We encourage you to also consider our other programs including: Leadership Principles, ED101, and our many workshops available.

Program Details

Required Course Material: Top 5 CliftonStrengths (Not included in course fee. To be completed individually online before the start of the course).

Prework: A quick organizational assessment and self-assessment before the start of the program.

Program Topics

Topics of each of the 3 half-day learning session.

Day 1 – Understanding Yourself and Your Role as a Manager

  • Assess your personal leadership strengths
  • Develop a vision of how you want to present yourself as a manager
  • Set priorities and objectives that align with your organization’s goals
  • Develop and resource work plans to achieve your priorities and objectives

    Day 2 – Delegation and Performance Management

    • Identify ways to motivate people by aligning their strengths to achieve the organization’s goals
    • Apply the principles of effective delegation
    • Describe the benefits of performance management
    • Identify strategies for implementing the three steps in the performance management process

      Day 3 – Supporting Your Team’s Performance

      • Apply strategies to address challenging situations
      • Describe behaviours that that foster staff/volunteer engagement, support inclusion and get the best from people
