Morag Carter

Director

Morag’s pursuit of environmental justice, local economic development and community inclusion is her life-long passion.

She has been the executive director of the Skills Centre and its sister organization, Inside Job Consulting, since 2017. It is here that she has realized her vision of a sustainable, inclusive community hub for Trail and its surrounding communities.

The Skills Centre is a not-for-profit whose mission is to strengthen rural and industrial communities in BC through workplace skills development, career development and training services, social development programming and business supports. The Skills Centre also led the development and delivery of the regional poverty reduction program Thriving For All.

Morag participates in several local, regional and provincial organizations and boards that are all focused on building strong, healthy, sustainable and curious communities. Among these are the Mir Centre for Peace, Vantage Point, and the Lower Columbia Community Development Team Society.

Prior to joining the Skills Centre and moving to Trail, Morag spent about 25 years in the environmental not-for-profit sector where she designed and implemented successful – occasionally even transformational – campaigns on chemical safety and human health, marine ecology, and climate and energy. She has worked for leading national and international environmental organizations including Greenpeace and the David Suzuki Foundation where she led the climate and energy team for a decade.

Morag has participated in the development of UN conventions including the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change as well as WTO international trade negotiations. She has participated in bi-national and national discussions on chemicals of concern and worked with provincial governments and federal parties to develop legislation to boost renewable energy supply and reduce Canada’s GHG emissions.

When she’s away from work, Morag can be found hiking in the woods, reading a good book with a glass of wine or singing along with the crowd at a concert.
