Capacity Building: Advocacy Fundamentals

How do you create change when you don’t have the resources or authority to make the change yourself? Advocacy! ​

In this workshop, participants will clarify their advocacy goals, develop a strategy, identify helpful resources and tools, and build confidence to engage community members in effective advocacy.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Articulate your goals for advocacy work.
  • Leverage community engagement in your advocacy work.
  • Identify key elements of an effective advocacy strategy.
  • Understand legal obligations and restrictions around advocacy.
  • Identify resources and tools to support your advocacy work.

Suggested Participants:

Non-profit leaders who are new to advocacy or need a review of advocacy fundamentals. Should you be attending our Government Relations workshop or Advocacy? Advocacy aims to influence public opinion to drive change on issues that matter to your community, while government relations targets decision-makers in government.​

Workshop Benefits:

Prairie Chiu

Prairie (she/her/hers) has worked with BC non-profits since 2017. Prior to joining Vantage Point in January 2024, Prairie supported provincial networks of community-based non-profits engaging in overdose prevention and response efforts. Prairie received her Master of Social Work from Smith College School for Social Work and is a graduate of the United Way Public Policy Institute. Her roles have ranged from direct service provision to public health administration. Prairie is committed to participatory processes and collaboration and believes in the power of the collective to enact change.

Fatima is one of our Planning Consultants at Vantage Point, specializing in working with clients in the vibrant Fraser Valley region. Her approach is rooted in nurturing community engagement and fostering intersectional partnerships, driven by her deep passion for empowering grassroots organizations to amplify their impact.

With a 15-year career in the non-profit sector, Fatima brings a wealth of experience, and a versatile skill set that includes collaboration, relationship-building, participatory facilitation, and innovative problem-solving. Her journey has been marked by transformative roles and impactful projects.
