Government Relations Foundations​

Strong government relations are a key part of successful advocacy campaigns for non-profit organizations.

In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of government relations, including tools and techniques to support you and your organization in your achieving your goals. ​

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:  

  • Explain why non-profit organizations should interact with government
  • Identify the different orders of government in Canada, and the differences between the political and bureaucratic side
  • Set a basic government relations strategy 
  • Implement best practices in your relationship with government

Suggested Participants:

Non-profit leaders who are new to government relations or are seeking support to improve their influence in government.

Facilitator

Prairie Chiu

Prairie (she/her/hers) has worked with BC non-profits since 2017. Prior to joining Vantage Point in January 2024, Prairie supported provincial networks of community-based non-profits engaging in overdose prevention and response efforts.

Prairie received her Master of Social Work from Smith College School for Social Work and is a graduate of the United Way Public Policy Institute. Her roles have ranged from direct service provision to public health administration.

Prairie is committed to participatory processes and collaboration and believes in the power of the collective to enact change.

Tyler Arnold

Tyler Arnold is our Policy and Advocacy Specialist, bringing extensive experience in government and political engagement.

Tyler’s professional journey spans roles as a political staffer, lobbyist, and now advocate in the non-profit world, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the many facets of Canadian governance. He believes strongly that despite differences, Canadians share a common desire to build a better future and that collaboration across sectors is key to achieving meaningful progress.

Known for his strengths in communication and relationship-building, Tyler excels at distilling complex policy issues into clear, actionable insights for decision-makers. His ability to foster positive relationships across governments and sectors is central to driving impactful advocacy efforts.

Outside of work, Tyler is an adventurer at heart, always eager to explore a new destination, discover fresh culinary experiences, or recreate dishes from his travels. His passions span from travel, food, and sports to politics, history, and the outdoors.

If he could be anywhere right now? Perhaps Indonesia—though next week he might choose somewhere entirely different.
